Generative AI Policies
The Journal of Indonesian and Malay World Studies recognizes that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies may offer benefits in academic writing and editorial processes. To ensure transparency and uphold academic integrity, any use of GenAI in the preparation, writing, analysis, translation, or editing of a manuscript must be clearly disclosed within the article. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, argumentation, citations, and ethical integrity of their manuscripts, regardless of AI involvement.
Permitted Use of AI-Assisted Tools
The journal permits the limited use of AI-assisted tools strictly for the following purposes:
- Assistance with language editing, grammar checking, and translation.
- Data visualization that neither generates nor manipulates research findings.
All AI-assisted tools must be used under human supervision. Authors are required to carefully review and edit all AI-generated outputs, as such tools may produce content that appears authoritative but is inaccurate, incomplete, or biased. Authors retain full responsibility and accountability for the content of their work. Under no circumstances may GenAI tools be credited as authors.
Prohibited Uses of Generative AI
The following activities are prohibited:
- Using GenAI to generate scientific content, arguments, literature reviews, data, or data analyses without proper disclosure.
- Including fabricated or inaccurate references or citations generated by AI.
- Using GenAI in peer review, editorial decision-making, or the handling of confidential manuscript materials.
Disclosure Requirements
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by including a statement at the end of the manuscript upon initial submission. This statement will appear in the published version of the article and should be placed in a separate section before the references. An example of the required format is provided below:
- Title of Section: Generative AI Usage Statement.
- Statement: During the preparation of this work, the author(s) utilized [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] for [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) thoroughly reviewed the content and made all necessary edits, thereby assuming full responsibility for the final version of the published article.
This declaration is not required for the use of basic tools such as grammar or spelling checkers and reference management software. If no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies have been used, no statement is required.
Note: The Journal of Indonesian and Malay World Studies reserves the right to reject, retract, or request revisions of manuscripts that contain undisclosed or unethical use of GenAI or AI-generated content. This policy may be updated in accordance with international publishing standards and Scopus recommendations.
