Author Guidelines

General Author Guidelines

Articles submitted for publication in the Journal of Social Welfare, Policy and Practice (JSWPP) must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Articles must be original, unpublished, and not under review for possible publication in another journal.
  • Articles should be based on research, whether library-based, fieldwork, or other types of research, and must fall within the journal's scope of social welfare, social policy, and social work practice.
  • All articles will be published in English. Authors may submit manuscripts in either English or Indonesian. Manuscripts initially submitted in Indonesian must be prepared in English before publication.
  • Articles should be approximately 6,000–12,000 words, including abstracts, notes, and references. Use Lora, 11 pt, with 1.15 line spacing on A4 paper, and 3 cm margins on all sides.
  • Submissions must be in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file formats. LaTeX files and PDFs are not accepted as the main manuscript file.
  • Articles should include: title; author names without academic titles, affiliations, and email addresses; abstracts in English and Indonesian; keywords in English; introduction; research methodology; results and discussion; conclusion; and references. A brief methodological account may be incorporated into the final paragraph of the introduction, as explained in the Reviewer Guidelines.
  • Provide each author's full name, university or professional affiliation, and a valid, contactable email address. To support double-anonymous review, place identifying information in the submission metadata and a separate title-page file; the manuscript sent for review must not disclose author identities or affiliations.
  • Each English and Indonesian abstract must be written in a single paragraph of 150–250 words. It should present the research background or problem, objective, methodology, main findings, and central argument or scholarly contribution.
  • Provide 3–5 keywords or phrases in English that represent the article's main concepts and support academic search and indexing.
  • Tables or diagrams must be numbered sequentially, with their number and title placed above them. Tables should be centered, with single-spaced content and bold headings.
  • Include figures in the electronic manuscript in JPG or PNG format. Ensure that labels and other information remain legible.
  • Foreign-language words or phrases should be italicized where appropriate. Where transliteration is needed, use a recognized system consistently and identify that system when necessary for clarity.
  • The reference list should include relevant primary sources and current secondary scholarship from books and peer-reviewed journals. Sources may include documentary materials, policy documents, and research evidence relevant to the study.
  • Use APA, 7th edition for author–date in-text citations and the reference list. Arrange references alphabetically. Every retrievable work cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and every reference-list entry must be cited in the text.

Examples of In-Text Citations

APA 7 uses author–date citations rather than bibliographical footnotes. The following examples illustrate citation forms using works from the reference examples below:

  1. Parenthetical citation for one author: (Fauzi, 2023).
  2. Narrative citation for one author: Fauzi (2023).
  3. Parenthetical citation for two authors: (Hakim & Nasution, 2023).
  4. Narrative citation for two authors: Hakim and Nasution (2023).
  5. For a work with three or more authors, use the first author's surname followed by et al. and the year from the first citation, unless additional names are needed to avoid ambiguity.
  6. For a direct quotation, include a page number, for example (Fauzi, 2023, p. 7). Use pp. for a page range.
  7. When citing multiple works in one set of parentheses, arrange them alphabetically and separate them with semicolons, for example (Bello, 2011; Fauzi, 2023).
  8. For a corporate author, use the institution's name and publication year. Introduce an abbreviation only where it is clear and useful for subsequent citations.
  9. Personal communications that readers cannot retrieve are cited in the text only, using the communicator's initials and surname, the words personal communication, and the full date. Do not include them in the reference list. Research-participant interviews should be reported as research data with appropriate confidentiality safeguards.
  10. For legislation, court decisions, and other legal materials, follow the applicable APA guidance and relevant legal citation conventions. Give sufficient information to identify the instrument, jurisdiction, provision, and source.

Footnotes may be used for necessary explanatory information, but must not replace APA author–date citations.

Examples of Reference-List Entries

The following entries illustrate APA-style presentation for journal articles and books. Authors should cite literature relevant to their own research rather than add these examples to their manuscripts automatically.

For edited-book chapters, include the chapter author and year, chapter title, editor names, book title, chapter page range, publisher, and DOI where available. For reports and policy documents, identify the individual or institutional author, date, title, report number where applicable, publisher where required, and DOI or URL. Use the appropriate APA 7 format for each source type.

Notes

  • Journal Template: Authors must follow the manuscript-formatting requirements stated on this page.
  • Apply transliteration consistently where relevant and provide sufficient explanation for terms that may be unfamiliar to an interdisciplinary readership.
  • Authors are strongly encouraged to consult the Reviewer Guidelines when preparing or revising manuscripts to ensure alignment with the journal's academic standards, structure, and analytical expectations.
  • Authors must complete the declaration of originality and agreement to submission requirements through the OJS submission checklist. A separate author-declaration form is not required.
